Should you work on Solo Projects or Join a Company in Gaming Industry

If you want to join a gaming industry, you will have to answer the first question which comes in the mind; work on solo projects or join a company? Well, that’s a bit tough one! If you asked me a couple of years back, going indie and bootstrapping was the only way to go. However, sitting in a basement with two of your best friends, trying to make the next big thing should still be the dream.

Though unfortunately, considering our social setup that far too often isn’t an option. Luckily, now the game industry is mature enough that you can work full time as a game developer and not be questioned about your sanity.

The middle ground is to be start working in a company, while working on solo projects in your free time. The good thing about the local industry is that none of your employers (at least those I know of) would have an issue with that. Rather, they might even help you with your project. The possibilities are not limited. It’s not a hundred customers you are competing for the social genre since the online (social) gaming is far from saturation. Even with Zynga and Playdom being there, there is still space for your solo project.

If you’re a student looking to get into the industry, the good news is there are so many online resources that show you everything from how to develop game art to how to code your first game. In-depth tutorials and online game development courses educate you without having to acquire a formal degree. If you’re still in high school, Physics is your friend, oh and so is Math. These two are going to be your best friends if you intend to join the gaming industry. Learn your physics, it won’t disappoint you.
