Top Prom Songs of Recent Years

With school back in session it won’t be that long before school dances like homecoming and prom come around. Dance committees across the country don’t just choose the most current cuts, but also focus on choosing danceable songs symbolic of friendship and graduation. Here are some popular possibilities:

Song Playlist Choices:

“Fall”: This song about high school romance is performed and co-written by Canadian singer Justin Bieber. It’s off his 2012 CD Believe.

“Let Go”: This tune is by the British duo Frou Frou off their 2002 debut disc Details. It is perhaps seen as symbolic of letting go and breaking away from the safeness of high school.

“Carry On”: This is the titular track off the indie pop band Fun’s 2012 album. This one can be interpreted as a musical call to arms to move out of high school and into the future. The success of the song demonstrates how young people find strength in the music.

“Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)”: This Green Day song, written by the group’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong in 1994, was not released until 1997 when it was included on their third album Dookie. While it may not be the most romantic track it has a bitter-sweetness perfect for prom.

“All We Are”: This tune is from Matt Nathanson’s 2007 release titled Some Mad Hope. With lyrics such as “Every day is a start of something beautiful,” this pretty piece is perfect for a high school dance.

“The Only Exception”: This love song by Paramore is off their 2009 CD Brand New Eyes. It’s a slow jam on which the group takes a different direction thanks in part to lead singer Hayley Williams’ rockin’ vocals.

“A Thousand Years”: Vampires might suck but the popularity of this song by Christina Perri and David Hodges proves they are still popular. The tune is taken from the 2012 disc The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and is just the type of romantic release high school girls love.

“Do You Remember”: This is a cut recorded by country singer Blake Shelton. It’s off the 2013 album Based on a True Story. . . While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, this slow, romantic song bring some variety to any playlist.

“Safe & Sound”: This love song by Taylor Swift was written for the 2012 soundtrack The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond. The popularity of the movie The Hunger Games made this track a huge hit.

“I Won’t Give Up”: This acoustic folk music ballad by Jason Mraz is off of the singer-songwriter’s fourth studio disc, Love Is a Four Letter Word, released in 2012. It is a song of dedication that would no doubt be appreciated by students whose significant others are going off to college or into the military and would be great as the closing cut to a prom playlist.

So there you have it, a mix of musical genres and a perfect playlist for proms and other significant soirees. A few slow dance ditties and closing cuts for the end of high school and the beginning of life. Enjoy!
