ZTE Unveils 5.7-inch Android Phablet ‘Grand Memo’

Formerly known as Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation, ZTE is not one of the leading names in the Android market. Little do people know is the fact that they are one of the leading mobile phone manufacturers around the world. They have finally decided to jump into the Android market. ZTE unveils the 5.7-inch Android device called Grand Memo and is nicknamed phablet. The device was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2013 which happened at Barcelona.

So, is there any gadget any different from its predecessors? Let’s take a look:

The Configurations:

Grand Memo is bigger than Samsung’s famous Galaxy Note II and is expected to be a huge device. The display is 1280X720 megapixels and is backed up by the latest processor, the Snapdragon 800 from Qualcomm. It runs on 1GB RAM and has back-up storage of 16GB. It also carries GPS and Wi-Fi functionalities.

Camera:

Looks like, the company has pulled all stops for this feature. The front-facing camera projects 13 megapixels and the front camera is 2 megapixels. Though the numbers look impressive, a lot of gadgets current have cameras that are 15 mega pixels. It would have been nice if the front-facing is better equipped. The details on the features matching the camera are not clear yet.

The Operating System:

The Grand Memo will carry the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 platform and will be skinned with ZTE’s personalized user interface. Though ZTE is using Jelly Bean for their Grand Memo, it is not the latest Android version. Google has already updated their Jelly Bean platform to 4.2. Hopefully, ZTE updates their device to the latest version.

The Design:

Well, it looks like a rip-off of HTC designs. The screen is huge and clear. The home page contains all the basic apps that one can find in today’s Android gadget. The phone is big with curved edges. It contains three touch options in the bottom. They are a home button, a back button and a list button. Though it is a huge phablet, it is a very sleek phone. It doesn’t feel bulky and is comfortable to carry around.

Will the Phone be a Hit?

The device is not bad. However, it is not good either. Though it has an impressive line-up in terms of configurations, you could find similar configurations in other devices. The feature standing out is its size. People who want a smaller tablet and a bigger android phone can consider buying this device. The other advantage to Grand Memo is the processor. The gadget is equipped with one of the fastest processors available in the market. Another feature that will determine the popularity of the device is the price. The company has not revealed the exact price of the device yet. The company is planning to release their Grand Memo by mid-2013.

ZTE has it all, the latest configurations and a Jelly Bean Operating System. But the company faces a stiff competition from the giants like Samsung and HTC. If they wish to popularize their name, they have to offer their product at a competitive price. We will soon know if Grand Memo is a hit or a miss.
